GNOME Foundation’s License Agreement
THE FOLLOWING IS A LEGAL AGREEMENT (“LICENSE”) BETWEEN GNOME FOUNDATION (“GNOME”) AND YOUR GNOME USER GROUP (“GROUP”).
BY INDICATING YOUR ACCEPTANCE AND SUBMITTING THIS LICENSE TO GNOME, THE GROUP AGREES TO BE LEGALLY BOUND BY AND COMPLY WITH THE TERMS OF THIS LICENSE.
Compliance with this License and with GNOME’s User Group Guidelines are conditions for remaining in good standing as a GNOME User Group and for obtaining any benefits offered by GNOME to recognized user groups.
The goal of this Agreement is to balance GNOME’s need to protect its important trademark rights with its desire to allow valued user groups to use certain GNOME trademarks in connection with working with its products and services.
1. Trademark License
Subject to the terms and conditions of this License, GNOME grants the Group a limited, nonexclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicenseable license to:
- Use the name “GNOME” as part of your user group name.
- Use a GNOME product name as part of your user group name, if the Group is focused on the use of such product.
- Display the GNOME user group logo(s) posted at http://www.gnome.org, in accordance with this License and GNOME’s trademark guidelines applicable to user groups (“Trademark Guidelines”).
The GNOME name, any permitted GNOME product names, and the GNOME logo(s) posted at http://www.gnome.org are collectively referred to as the “Licensed Marks.”
Restrictions and conditions:
- The Group may not use the Licensed Marks for any commercial purpose or in any manner not expressly permitted.
- All uses of the Licensed Marks must comply with the Trademark Guidelines.
- GNOME may request copies of materials containing the Licensed Marks to ensure compliance.
- The Group may use the Licensed Marks solely in connection with official Group activities as described at http://www.gnome.org and in related non-commercial communications.
Without GNOME’s express written permission, neither the Group nor its members shall:
- State or imply they speak for, act on behalf of, or represent GNOME.
- State or imply GNOME endorses, approves, or recommends any views or activities of the Group.
- Use “GNOME” or any GNOME trademark in a URL or domain name.
- Use any GNOME trademark other than the Licensed Marks.
- Take any action that might harm the distinctive quality of the Licensed Marks or GNOME’s reputation.
2. Copyright License
Subject to the terms and conditions of this License, GNOME grants the Group a limited, nonexclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicenseable license to:
- Reproduce and distribute in print and electronic format the Licensed Works to members of the Group.
- Post the Licensed Works on the Group’s website.
- Display the Licensed Works at Group meetings and official events.
Licensed Works include newsletters, marketing materials, or other copyrightable works GNOME may provide to user groups.
Exclusions:
- Computer software and documentation are excluded and require a separate license.
- GNOME may impose additional terms or restrictions for specific Licensed Works.
- Modifications are not allowed, except for minor updates to invitations or announcements for Group activities.
- GNOME may withdraw rights to use any Licensed Work at any time.
3. Legal Notice
Trademark Notices
The following must appear with all uses of the Licensed Marks:
GNOME and the GNOME logo(s) are trademarks or registered trademarks of GNOME Foundation in the U.S.A. or other countries.
[Group name] is an independent user group that does not speak for, act on behalf of, or represent GNOME Foundation, nor are its views ascribed to or practices recommended by GNOME Foundation.
Copyright Notices
- Existing copyright notices must be reproduced on all copies of Licensed Works.
- If no notice appears, use:

4. Ownership Rights
- GNOME owns all Licensed Marks and Licensed Works, including modifications and derivative works.
- The Group acquires no ownership rights.
- All use benefits GNOME exclusively.
- No registration of trademarks, company names, domain names, or other identifiers containing GNOME trademarks is allowed without permission.
- Unauthorized domain names must be transferred to GNOME at no cost.
- All rights not expressly granted are reserved.
5. User Group Compliance
- Rights are conditioned on ongoing compliance with this License and GNOME’s User Group Guidelines.
- The Group is responsible for ensuring members comply with both.
- Guidelines may change and are posted on GNOME’s website.
6. Termination
- The License is effective upon acceptance and submission by the Group’s authorized representative.
- Either party may terminate at any time.
- GNOME may terminate immediately if terms are violated.
- GNOME may:
- Modify the License or Trademark Guidelines.
- Withdraw rights in certain jurisdictions.
- End the user group program entirely.
- If terminated, the Group must cease all use of the Licensed Marks and Works and return all materials to GNOME.
7. Disclaimer; Limitation of Liability
The License is granted “AS IS”, without warranties of any kind.
GNOME is not liable for any direct, indirect, special, incidental, or consequential damages.
8. Permitted Access
Upon acceptance, the Group’s representative may:
- Request a copy of the GNOME user group logo(s).
- Be added to distribution lists for Licensed Works.
9. Miscellaneous
- Governed by Massachusetts law.
- Disputes resolved in Middlesex County, Massachusetts.
- Arbitration under the American Arbitration Association rules for certain disputes.
- Jury trial waived.
- This License is the complete agreement and may only be modified in writing by GNOME.
- Non-transferable without GNOME’s consent.
- If a provision is invalid, the rest remains in effect.
- No waiver is valid unless in writing.
10. Privacy Policy
GNOME collects personal information from user group members.
GNOME’s privacy policy (linked on their website) applies and is incorporated into this License.

To execute this license, send the following to licensing@gnome.org:
- User Group’s Name
- User Group’s Address
- User Group’s Contact E-mail
- Submitter’s Name
- Signature (typing your name in the e-mail serves as your signature)
- Acceptance Statement:
I have read and agree to the terms of the GNOME User Group License Agreement. I confirm that I have the authority to accept and submit this License to GNOME on behalf of the Group.
